Enjoy Your Holidays:
(updated on 11 Nov) Out November meeting was a great success! Big thanks to the Select Group for providing some delicious sandwiches, please visit their site for continuously changing job opportunities! Also, thanks to Brett Tomson for filling the gap and sharing Report Builder 3.0 with us. We had 3 new members and many familiar faces show for the night.
tripassBI is not scheduling a December meeting. Please enjoy your Thanksgiving and Christmas with your family. Be ready to focus on SQL 2012 Integration Services come the new year. Check back for meeting details – and don’t forget about the numerous virtual opportunities continuing weekly.

tripassBI is an Official Chapter of the Professional Association for SQL Server Users. This chapter is focused exclusively on the Business Intelligence side of SQL Server. Our sister chapter tripass focuses on administrative and developer topics (although we will cross subjects from time to time). The Business Intelligence side is generally limited to Analysis Services (SSAS), Integration Services (SSIS) and Reporting Services (SSRS). Of course there is also Visio, Excel and many front ends used for presentation layer and much in Management Studio for the administration of these BI services. So that’s our mission statement — training and education on all these incredible tools.
The chapter charter was submitted to PASS in November 2010, meetings started in January 2011. Sandra A Mueller (Blog | Twitter) is the chapter founder and will server as leader for the first two years, after which time elections will be held to ensure that interested parties can participate and experience the pleasure that is involved in a chapter. Mike Thomas (Contact) will serve as Sponsors Coordinator.
Speakers will be found within the region, if you are interested please contact Sandra A Mueller (Contact). Of course some MVPs will be courted back but we will also be aggressively seeking new voices from within our midst. This can be accomplished by breaking Saturday’s into chunks, holding lightning sessions during meetings and promoting each other. In addition to speaking this site will support posting from the community to share information (for those that want to try an article or two without a full blown ‘blog’).
Why we are unique!
Our approach to this user group is unique (as of my writing this) in that we will include quarterly Saturday training days. The model we will use is based on a quarterly topic approach. The first month of the quarter we will meet on a Saturday and do an in-depth HANDS-ON introduction to the topic. The second and third months of the quarter we will meet at night to a normal presentation, building on the Saturday learning.
As the quarters progress the topics will advance. Next time we touch SSAS the topic will start where we were and move towards creating KPIs and Actions, etc.
Microsoft Certification
With this continuing approach we hope to fit in quarters, or side study groups to work together on obtaining MCTS and MCITP certifications for user group members.
New Releases — “SQL2012″
As new releases become available, such as SQL Server 2012 — CTP3, we will spend time learning the available options, upgrades and improvements. Hopefully we can also work with PASS and Microsoft to be part of launch events.
triPASS
We will continue to stay plugged into our sister chapter tripass. Cross promotion will be prominent, as we continue to keep you plugged into the SQL Server community at large. SQL Saturday’s will be a team effort, where tripassBI will be essential for supporting and contributing to Raleigh hosting another awesome event!
VOLUNTEERs
Everything we are able to accomplish is through volunteerism. If you have 5 minutes to 5 hours to share please contact Sandra Mueller (Sandra@tripassBI.org).

I would encourage anyone interested to come out. BI is becoming more critical because management wants it, and (conveniently), MS is building more features right into the products. That to me is important because really the only cost is learning how to use them (which is fun). I like the idea of the training sessions so the theory can be put into practice.

Is there anyone studying for the 70-432 MS SQL Server 2008 Certification?
I’m interested in hearing from any current or former members of the Carolinas Chapter of The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI). I’m particularly interested in learning how TDWI might have helped you grow professionally, your experiences with the Chapter and such. Thank you!
